Who was Gene Chaney: Mr. Chaney was a hard-working man who loved life and encouraged young people to educate themselves. Education through college or trade tech; that you become self-supporting and that you enjoy the fruits of your work so that you enjoy life to the fullest. He was the 6th child born to his recently widowed mother in 1934. He was a Christian married (twice) man, a father to 8, grandfather to 15.
He was raised by women who migrated from the racism of Mississippi to Los Angeles, CA. He saw many social changes in his lifetime, including the Constitutional Amendment giving blacks the right to vote, the LA Watts riots, the Assignation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and before he passed the first and only African American President of the United States.
Mr. Chaney worked for LADWP for over 25 years. Throughout his career, he encouraged young adults to study and test for jobs with the City of LA/LADWP. This included attending workshops to learn about the opportunities including how to improve test scores for placement into well-paying-high-demand positions. He talked to everyone he came in contact with and always had a smile on his face. He was a member of the Outsiders RV Club for nearly 12 years and was a proponent of the club giving back to the community.
